Wi-Fi Hotspot Activation – Turn on Hotspot for iPhone & Android
Factory-level activation of the in-car 4G/5G Wi-Fi hotspot for Land Rover, Range Rover & Jaguar — using JLR Pathfinder, SDD & CCF configuration. Connect your iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or any Wi-Fi device.
Service Overview
LR-Retrofit offers a complete Wi-Fi Hotspot activation service for all compatible JLR vehicles. Modern Land Rover, Range Rover, and Jaguar models are equipped with an integrated telematics control unit (TCU) that contains a 4G or 5G cellular modem capable of broadcasting a Wi-Fi hotspot inside the vehicle. However, in many vehicles this feature is present in the hardware but disabled in the software either at the factory (due to market-specific restrictions, fleet policies, or initial build specification) or as a result of a previous module replacement that did not carry over the correct configuration.
Using the same JLR Pathfinder and SDD (Service Diagnostic System) tools used by main dealers, we connect to the vehicle’s OBD port, read the current Car Configuration File (CCF), and modify the relevant parameters to enable the Wi-Fi hotspot function. Once activated, the TCU broadcasts a secure Wi-Fi network (SSID) that allows up to 8 simultaneous devices — iPhone, iPad, Android phones, tablets, laptops — to connect to the internet using the vehicle’s own data connection (via the vehicle’s SIM card or a user-provided data SIM). The hotspot appears in the vehicle’s infotainment settings menu under Connections / Wi-Fi Hotspot, exactly as it would from the factory.
This is a purely software-based activation — no additional hardware, wiring, or SIM slot modifications are required. If your vehicle has the physical TCU module (which is almost all JLR vehicles from 2015 onwards with a JLR infotainment system), the hotspot can be enabled.
How the Activation Works – CCF & Module Configuration
The Wi-Fi hotspot functionality is controlled by a set of parameters within the vehicle’s Car Configuration File (CCF). The CCF is the master database that tells each module which features are present on the vehicle. For the TCU and infotainment system, there are specific CCF bits that define:
- Wi-Fi Hotspot Active – the primary enable/disable flag for the hotspot feature.
- TCU Data Connection Type – defines whether the TCU uses an embedded SIM (multi-IMSI) or an external user SIM.
- Maximum Client Limit – sets the maximum number of simultaneous Wi-Fi clients (typically 8).
- Hotspot SSID Visibility – determines whether the network name is broadcast or hidden.
- Security Mode – WPA2-PSK or open (factory default is WPA2).
Our process uses JLR Pathfinder to read the current CCF, identify the hotspot-related parameters, and modify them to the factory-enabled state. We then perform a CCF validation to ensure the changes are accepted by all relevant modules (TCU, Infotainment Master, Gateway Module). After the configuration is written, we clear any fault codes and perform a full network scan to confirm the hotspot is active and broadcasting. The entire process takes approximately 45 minutes.
Turn on Hotspot – iPhone, iPad & Android Compatibility
Once the Wi-Fi hotspot is activated in the vehicle, connecting your iPhone, iPad, or Android device is identical to connecting to any standard Wi-Fi network. The hotspot supports WPA2-PSK security, so you enter the password (displayed on the infotainment screen) into your device’s Wi-Fi settings. There is no need for additional apps, profiles, or configuration on the phone side. The vehicle acts as a standard Wi-Fi router. Compatible devices include:
- iPhone 6 and newer (all iOS versions)
- iPad (all models with Wi-Fi)
- Android phones (any device with Wi-Fi capability)
- Windows laptops, MacBooks, Chromebooks
- Games consoles (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita)
- Any device that supports 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi
Important: The vehicle’s TCU must have a data connection to provide internet access. Most JLR vehicles come with an embedded multi-IMSI SIM that can be activated through Jaguar Land Rover’s connected services (InControl, Pivi Pro). Alternatively, if your TCU supports a user-replaceable SIM, you can insert a standard data SIM from any UK network provider. We can advise on your specific vehicle’s SIM configuration during the service.
Supported Vehicle Models
Our Wi-Fi Hotspot activation covers all JLR vehicles equipped with a compatible TCU and infotainment system (generally vehicles from 2015 onwards with InControl Touch, Touch Pro, or Pivi Pro). Key models include:
- Land Rover Discovery 5 (L462)
- Range Rover L405
- Range Rover Sport L494
- Range Rover Velar L560
- Range Rover Evoque L538 / L551
- Land Rover Defender L663
- Land Rover Freelander 2 (late models with TCU)
- Jaguar XE X760
- Jaguar XF X260
- Jaguar F-Pace X761
- Jaguar I-Pace (all years)
- Jaguar F-Type X152 (with InControl)
Why LR-Retrofit for Wi-Fi Hotspot Activation?
- Genuine JLR Pathfinder & SDD tools – We use the same diagnostic and programming equipment as main dealers. No generic OBD tools or aftermarket coding cables.
- CCF specialist expertise – We understand the exact CCF parameters that control the hotspot. Incorrect configuration can cause infotainment errors or module communication faults. We have performed hundreds of CCF modifications without a single failure.
- Full infotainment reset and test – After activation, we reboot the infotainment system, verify the hotspot menu appears, and test the Wi-Fi broadcast with a device to confirm the internet connection is working.
- No ongoing subscriptions required – Once activated, the hotspot function remains enabled even if you never subscribe to JLR’s connected services. You simply insert a data SIM (if your TCU supports it) or use the embedded SIM with a data plan.
- Mobile service across UK – For London, Midlands, and Southern England, we can activate the hotspot at your home or workplace. No dealer appointments or waiting times.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a data SIM for the hotspot to work?
Yes, the Wi-Fi hotspot provides internet access only if the vehicle’s TCU has an active data connection. Many JLR vehicles have an embedded multi-IMSI SIM that can be activated through JLR’s InControl or Pivi Pro subscription services. Alternatively, if your TCU has a user-accessible SIM slot (common on earlier models), you can use a standard data SIM from any UK network. We can check your vehicle’s SIM configuration during the service and advise on the best option.
Will the activation affect my vehicle warranty?
No. The activation modifies the CCF using the same tools and procedures that JLR dealerships use. It does not alter any firmware, tamper with module hardware, or leave any trace of non-approved modification. The change is invisible to JLR systems as it is simply restoring a factory configuration option.
Can I still use the hotspot if I don’t pay for JLR Connected Services?
Yes — once the hotspot is enabled, it remains active regardless of your subscription status. However, to access the internet, you must have a data route. This can be either the embedded SIM with an active InControl subscription or a third-party data SIM (if your TCU supports it). We provide full guidance on this during the activation.
How many devices can connect at once?
The factory configuration supports up to 8 simultaneous connected devices. This is the standard limit for JLR TCU modules. Performance will vary based on the cellular signal strength and data plan speed.
What if my vehicle doesn’t have the TCU hardware?
Our free VIN pre-check will confirm TCU presence immediately. If the hardware is not fitted, we can quote for a TCU retrofit (including module, wiring, and activation) — this is a separate service. The majority of 2015+ JLR vehicles with InControl Touch, Touch Pro, or Pivi Pro have the TCU fitted as standard.
