The system operates through a combination of **Keyless Vehicle Module (KVM)**, **inner door handle capacitive sensors**, **rear bumper-mounted passive antennas**, and a dedicated **audible warning module** (chirp generator). When the key fob approaches within ~1.5 meters of the driver's door, the KVM detects the LF (Low Frequency, 125 kHz) signal from the fob, authenticates it via the immobiliser handshake (CAN bus message 0x3B0), and sends a door unlock command to the BCM (Body Control Module). Walk-away locking triggers when the fob leaves the detection zone (~2.5 meters) and the last door is closed — the BCM then locks all doors and sounds the chirp.
Technical Architecture: Passive Entry & Passive Start (PEPS) System
The retrofit involves the following JLR systems and CAN message paths:
- KVM (Keyless Vehicle Module) – C0308: Central controller for PEPS. Located behind the rear seat back (L322) or in the rear quarter panel (L405/L494). Processes LF signals from three interior antennas (centre console, rear seat, boot) and three exterior antennas (driver door, passenger door, rear bumper). Communicates with BCM and ECM via HS CAN (500 kbps) on messages 0x3B0 (immobiliser) and 0x4F1 (passive entry status).
- Interior LF Antennas (×3): These emit a 125 kHz magnetic field to locate the key fob inside the vehicle. One in the overhead console (front), one in the centre console (rear), one in the loadspace trim. Required for Approach Unlock detection (fob must be inside detection range to trigger unlock).
- Exterior LF Antennas (×3): Located in the driver door handle (for approach unlock), passenger door handle, and behind the rear bumper (for tailgate approach). Each antenna has a coverage zone of approximately 1.5m radius.
- Door Handle Capacitive Sensors: For Walk-away Lock, each door handle (front and rear) contains a capacitive electrode that detects the driver's hand touch when exiting. The KVM monitors the capacitance change (typically 10-20 pF shift) to determine when the driver has released the handle and closed the door. This signal confirms the driver has left the vehicle.
- BCM (Body Control Module) – C0295: The BCM receives the lock/unlock request from KVM via CAN and actuates the door lock motors (central locking system). It also controls the Chirp Module (if fitted) or uses the existing PDM (Passenger Door Module) to generate the audible warning via the door speakers or a dedicated buzzer.
- Chirp Module (Audible Warning Generator): A small module (JLR part LR123456) mounted in the passenger side A-pillar or behind the glovebox. It generates the “chirp” sound (850 Hz, 200ms duration) on lock/unlock. Alternatively, on later models with the Premium Sound System, the chirp can be routed through the front door speakers via the ACM (Audio Control Module) configuration.
- RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) Fob: Must be a PEPS-compatible fob with LF presence detection capability. Standard RKE fobs (non-PEPS) do not support passive entry; they must be replaced with fobs that contain the LF receiver (typically JLR part LR070809 or later).
The key difference between standard RKE (press button on fob) and PEPS (passive entry) is the LF wake-up signal. In a standard system, the fob only transmits when a button is pressed (UHF, 315/433 MHz). In PEPS, the KVM emits continuous LF pings (every 200ms when the fob is near the vehicle); the fob detects this, authenticates, and responds with a UHF signal. Our retrofit installs the KVM module, antennas, and door handle sensors to enable this bidirectional LF communication.
- BCM Generation: This retrofit requires a BCM from MY2013 onward (for L405) or MY2010 onward for L322 (late facelift). The BCM firmware must support the “Passive Entry & Passive Start” CAN messages. If your BCM is pre-2010, we may need to replace it with a compatible unit (additional cost).
- KVM Mounting: L322 does not have a factory KVM mounting bracket or the wiring harness for the PEPS system. We supply a bespoke mounting bracket (3D-printed from ABS) and a full CAN/LF wiring harness with OEM connectors. The KVM is typically mounted behind the rear seat back or inside the loadspace side trim.
- Door Handle Compatibility: L322 (2002-2009) uses a different door handle electrode design than later models. For pre-2009 L322, we supply retrofitted handle sensors that integrate into the existing handle mechanism. For L322 (2009-2012) and all L405/L494, the factory handle already has the capacitive sensor; we only need to connect it to the KVM.
- Audible Lock Warning: The chirp feature requires either a dedicated chirp module (for vehicles without factory alarm siren) or enabling the existing alarm siren to chirp on lock/unlock. For L322, we install a chirp module; for L405/L494, we can enable the siren chirp via BCM calibration (no additional hardware needed).
- Fob Replacement: If your existing fob does not have PEPS capability (check by looking for the “unlock on approach” icon on the fob), you will need two new PEPS fobs. These are programmed to the KVM during installation. The cost of two new fobs is included in the kit price.

Retrofit Process: JLR Technical Workflow
- VIN Audit & BCM Compatibility Check: We check your VIN against JLR SSM (Service Source Manager) to determine the BCM part number and firmware version. If the BCM supports PEPS (indicated by “PEPS” in the BCM software variant), we proceed. If not, we supply a replacement BCM pre-programmed with your VIN.
- KVM Module Installation:
- Mount the KVM module in the designated location (rear seat back for L322; rear quarter panel for L405/L494).
- Connect the KVM to the vehicle's HS CAN bus (pins 6 and 14 of OBD connector) using the supplied CAN splitter harness.
- Connect the KVM to the interior LF antennas (supplied with 1.5m cables): one overhead console, one centre console rear, one loadspace.
- Connect the KVM to the three exterior LF antennas: driver door handle, passenger door handle, rear bumper. For L322, the door handle antennas are integrated into the new capacitive sensors.
- Door Handle Sensor Installation:
- Remove the door trim and door handle assembly. For L322 (pre-2009), fit the supplied capacitive sensor board inside the handle housing. For later models, connect the existing sensor wire to the KVM harness.
- Each door handle sensor requires a two-wire connection: power (5V from KVM) and signal (capacitance value). The wires are routed through the door hinge grommet and into the cabin.
- Rear Bumper Antenna Installation:
- Mount the LF antenna (LR073123) behind the rear bumper trim, centred between the two number plate lights. The antenna must be within 15mm of the bumper surface for optimal range.
- Route the antenna cable along the left side of the loadspace, behind the carpet, to the KVM location.
- Chirp Module Installation (for L322 & early L405):
- Mount the chirp module behind the glovebox (L322) or in the passenger A-pillar (L405). Secure with double-sided tape.
- Connect the chirp module to the BCM via the dedicated “Chirp” wire (pin 23 of BCM connector C2280C on L322). For L405, the chirp signal is routed through the alarm siren; no separate module is needed.
- Enable chirp function via BCM calibration (SDD: Body Control Module > Configuration > Audible Lock Warning > Enable).
- Fob Programming:
- Using SDD, programme the two PEPS fobs to the KVM. This involves a three-step process: (1) KVM learns the fob's LF ID; (2) KVM confirms fob presence via UHF response; (3) BCM learns the fob's RKE encryption key.
- Test each fob by walking toward the vehicle (approach unlock) and away (walk-away lock).
- System Validation: We verify:
- Approach Unlock works from both driver and passenger side (fob detection zone overlap).
- Walk-away Lock triggers after 3-second delay (variable via SDD, default 3s).
- Audible Lock Warning chirps once on lock, twice on unlock. Volume is set to Level 2.
- Touch-to-Lock works from all four door handles (if equipped with sensors).
- No DTCs stored in KVM, BCM, or RFA (Remote Function Actuator) modules.
