What Park Assist Delivers

Park Assist supports two manoeuvre types. Parallel Park Assist handles kerbside gaps between two parked vehicles, which many drivers find the most demanding task of all. Perpendicular Park Assist handles bay spaces in car parks, where you reverse between two stationary vehicles. In both cases, the Parking Aid Module (PAM) evaluates the gap and confirms whether it provides enough clearance for your vehicle.

Once you accept the manoeuvre, the system controls the steering. You keep authority over the accelerator and brake on most platforms, so you decide exactly how fast the vehicle moves. The touchscreen displays your progress with step-by-step prompts, and the parking aid tones continue to report distance to nearby objects. Later platforms also manage drive and reverse selection and apply the brakes automatically when the situation requires it.

Park Exit reverses the process. It guides your vehicle out of a tight bay where forward visibility is limited. The system steers while you control speed, and Blind Spot Assist plus Reverse Traffic Detection monitor the traffic approaching from both sides.

Park Assist also integrates with the Surround Camera System where fitted. You view the manoeuvre from several angles while the system handles the steering geometry, which builds confidence in tight multi-storey car parks.

How the System Works

Ultrasonic sensors mounted in the front and rear bumpers measure the available space and report object distances to the PAM. The module then calculates the steering trajectory required to place your vehicle within the gap. During the manoeuvre, the PAM sends steering commands over the vehicle’s CAN network to the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. The EPS applies the calculated steering angle continuously and adjusts it as the vehicle moves.

Where the platform supports automatic braking, the PAM also requests braking force from the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP). The Transmission Control Module handles drive and reverse selection on those platforms, which allows a fully managed manoeuvre.

JLR fits the required sensors, wiring and EPS hardware to most compatible vehicles at the factory. The restriction sits within the CCF and the PAM calibration rather than in the hardware.
