Traffic Jam Assist Retrofit for Land Rover & Jaguar
Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) extends your vehicle’s Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go by adding low-speed steering assistance in congested traffic. When the system operates below approximately 60 km/h, it helps keep your vehicle centred within its lane while maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. LR-Retrofit activates this function on compatible Jaguar and Land Rover models through factory-compliant software coding within your vehicle’s Central Configuration File (CCF). We work with licensed JLR diagnostic tools and official calibration data. You then experience a noticeable reduction in driving effort during stop-start traffic conditions.
What Traffic Jam Assist Delivers
TJA builds on two systems working together. Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go manages longitudinal control, meaning it handles speed and distance. It brings your vehicle to a complete stop when traffic halts and resumes automatically when the vehicle ahead moves forward. Traffic Jam Assist adds lateral control. The system applies gentle steering inputs through the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system to keep your vehicle centred in its lane.
The steering assistance operates within a defined speed window. The system activates below approximately 60 km/h (37 mph), which covers the slow-moving traffic conditions where driver workload peaks[reference:0]. The system requires lane markings that it can identify clearly, and it works best on roads with a lane width between approximately 2.6 and 4.2 metres[reference:1].
Your vehicle’s Driver Condition Monitor continues to monitor your engagement. The system checks for steering inputs at regular intervals. When it detects no driver input for a period, it displays a prompt asking you to place your hands on the steering wheel. This safeguard keeps you in the loop while the system operates. You can override any steering input at any time by applying gentle pressure to the wheel.
How the System Works
TJA relies on your vehicle’s forward camera and its Adaptive Cruise Control radar sensor. The camera, mounted near the rear-view mirror, identifies lane markings and calculates your vehicle’s position within the lane. The radar sensor, mounted behind the front grille, measures the distance and relative speed of the vehicle ahead. On many compatible platforms, the radar operates at 77 GHz with a detection range of up to 150 metres[reference:2].
The Image Processing Module (IPMA) processes camera data and the radar module processes object data. Both modules communicate over the vehicle’s CAN network with the Adaptive Cruise Control module and the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. When TJA is active, the ACC module manages speed while the IPMA and EPS coordinate the steering assistance.
The system activates through the instrument cluster menu. You select Traffic Jam Assist from the driver assistance section once ACC is active and operating below the required speed threshold[reference:3].
Hardware Requirements
TJA depends on a specific set of hardware. We verify each component during the pre-scan, and we confirm the exact part numbers against your vehicle’s configuration. Where your vehicle already carries the required components, the activation remains a software procedure.
The following components must be present and compatible:
- Forward-facing camera — the IPMA must support lane detection and be at the correct software level.
- Adaptive Cruise Control radar sensor — the ACC system must be fitted and operational.
- Electric Power Steering — required for automatic steering torque application.
- Anti-Lock Braking System module — must support the ACC and TJA functions.
- Steering wheel controls — ACC buttons must be present on the steering wheel.
- Hands-on detection sensor — required on some later platforms to confirm driver presence at the wheel[reference:4].
Some models require a specific ABS module part number. During the pre-scan, we confirm whether your current ABS module supports TJA or whether a replacement is needed before coding begins.
Compatible Vehicles
LR-Retrofit activates Traffic Jam Assist on a wide range of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles. Compatibility depends on your model year and existing hardware. The following platforms typically support this retrofit:
| Land Rover Models | Jaguar Models |
|---|---|
| Range Rover L405 / L461 (2018–present) | F-Pace X761 (2019–present) |
| Range Rover Sport L494 / L461 (2018–present) | XF X260 (2019–present) |
| Range Rover Velar L560 (2019–present) | XE X760 (2019–present) |
| Discovery L462 (2019–present) | E-Pace X540 (2019–present) |
| Discovery Sport L550 (2019–present) | I-Pace X590 (2019–present) |
| Defender L663 (2020–present) | |
| Evoque L551 (2019–present) |
Our team confirms your vehicle’s exact configuration before we begin. We check your VIN, IPMA software level, ACC radar fitment, ABS module part number and current CCF settings to build a tailored activation plan.
Activation Process
LR-Retrofit performs Traffic Jam Assist activation through professional software coding. The process follows a structured sequence:
- Pre-scan and assessment — we read every relevant module, confirm hardware compatibility and identify any software dependencies.
- Module preparation — where required, we update the IPMA and related module firmware to the correct level.
- CCF coding — we modify the relevant CCF parameters, including TJA fitment and steering assist settings, using licensed JLR diagnostic tools[reference:5].
- Module relearn — we restart the affected modules and perform a CCF relearn so all systems recognise the new configuration.
- Functional validation — we verify system operation, scan for fault codes and confirm correct ACC and steering assist behaviour before handover.
We complete the activation at our workshop or through remote coding, depending on your location and vehicle setup. Where hardware installation is required, we supply genuine JLR components and complete the work in the same session.
Why Choose LR-Retrofit

Note: Traffic Jam Assist is a driver aid, not an autonomous driving system. Drivers must remain attentive, keep their hands on the steering wheel and maintain control of the vehicle at all times. The system operates only when lane markings are clearly visible and road conditions permit. Do not use the system in poor visibility, on icy or slippery roads, or where road layout prevents reliable lane detection.
