2.2L TD4 122hp Chip-Tuning — Stage 1 Calibration for Land Rover Defender (L316)
The 122PS 2.2-litre TD4 is JLR’s most deliberately restricted calibration of the DT224/Puma engine family. The hardware — 2,198cc, four cylinders, DOHC, chain-driven, common-rail diesel with variable-geometry turbocharging — matches the higher-output 2.2 derivatives. The Bosch and Siemens engine management platforms that run this engine support substantially more torque and power than the 122PS map exposes. JLR detuned this variant for fleet emissions positioning, commercial-vehicle taxation thresholds, and driveline life management across a globally distributed Defender customer base.
Our Stage 1 calibration removes those software restrictions. You keep the standard turbocharger, the standard injectors, the standard clutch, and the standard exhaust after-treatment. You gain 28–38PS and 60Nm through the exact operating range that matters in a Defender: 1,800 to 3,200 rpm, where the vehicle actually works.
Why the 122PS Map Leaves Performance on the Table
The 122PS TD4 produces 360Nm at 2,000 rpm. The same DT224 long-block in other JLR and Ford applications delivers 400Nm and beyond from the factory. The difference is not mechanical. It is the torque-request mapping inside the engine control module — specifically, the driver-demand-to-torque conversion tables, the smoke-limitation ceiling, and the gearbox torque-limiter schedules that JLR calibrated conservatively for this variant.
The Defender’s calibration carries additional protection layers. JLR programmed gear-specific torque truncation into the ECU, limiting output in the lower gearbox ratios to protect the transmission and transfer case during low-range crawling and heavy towing. A generic “more boost and more fuel” file ignores those layers and creates real durability risk. A correct Stage 1 calibration works with them.
The SID208 Calibration Pathway
The 122PS Defender runs a Siemens/Continental SID208 engine control module in most production years, with Bosch EDC17CP42 appearing in certain later build phases. We identify your ECU hardware before writing any file. The Stage 1 calibration adjusts rail-pressure targets, injection duration and timing, boost-control schedules, and torque-limiter thresholds within the validated operating envelope of the standard hardware. We do not disable torque monitoring, we do not remove the gearbox protection logic, and we do not touch the DPF or EGR monitor routines unless you request those services separately.
Measured Stage 1 Outcomes
| Parameter | 122PS TD4 (Stock) | Stage 1 (Conservative) | Stage 1 (Full Torque) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum Power | 122 PS (90 kW) | 150 PS (110 kW) | 160 PS (118 kW) |
| Maximum Torque | 360 Nm @ 2,000 rpm | 420 Nm | 420 Nm |
| Power Gain | — | +28 PS | +38 PS |
| Torque Gain | — | +60 Nm | +60 Nm |
The conservative calibration suits vehicles that spend significant time in low-range operation, heavy towing, or high-ambient-temperature environments. The full-torque calibration delivers the maximum safe output for road-biased and mixed-use Defenders. Both retain the factory torque truncation in first and reverse gears — the transmission protection JLR engineered remains active.
Driveline and Emission Safeguards
We calibrate the Stage 1 file against the specific gearbox and transfer-case configuration of your vehicle. The Defender’s manual transmission and LT230 transfer case carry validated torque ceilings, and the ECU’s gear-specific limiter tables enforce those ceilings in the lowest ratios. The Stage 1 file raises the ceiling in the higher gears where the driveline can accept the additional load, and preserves the protective truncation in first and reverse. This is the same strategy JLR uses in the higher-output calibrations of this engine family.
The DPF regeneration strategy, EGR flow monitoring, lambda control, and all OBD readiness monitors remain fully operational. The calibration keeps the factory emission-control architecture intact, so the vehicle continues to meet its original compliance obligations and passes diagnostic inspection without flagging tuning-related fault codes.
What Changes Behind the Wheel
The 122PS Defender’s most common complaint is not outright slowness — it is the narrow usable torque band and the reluctance to pull cleanly from low revs. The Stage 1 calibration widens that band substantially. The engine holds 420Nm from approximately 1,700 rpm through 2,800 rpm, which transforms overtaking, hill starts with a loaded trailer, and motorway gradient work. Throttle response becomes linear rather than stepped, and the vehicle pulls a gear higher through corners and slip roads without demanding a downshift. Off-road, the additional low-speed torque reduces the throttle input needed for technical sections and gives the driver finer control over traction.
Ordering and Calibration Support
Select your Defender model year, ECU type (SID208 or EDC17CP42), and transmission configuration at checkout. Our calibration team cross-checks the order against the vehicle’s ECU identification and hardware specification before releasing the file. You receive the calibration delivery, a vehicle-specific flashing guide, and direct engineering support for the SID208 and EDC17CP42 platforms.
Release the performance the 122PS calibration holds back. Stage 1 chip tuning for the 2.2 TD4 Defender — JLR-informed calibration, driveline protection retained, emission monitors intact.
