Configurable Terrain Response Mode Retrofit
Product Code: LR-RETRO-TR-CONFIG-20 | Vehicle: Land Rover Discovery 4 (L319), Range Rover Sport (L494), Range Rover (L405), Range Rover Evoque (L538), Land Rover Freelander 2 (L359) | System: Terrain Response 2 – Configurable Mode Activation
Welcome to the definitive JLR technical guide for retrofitting **Configurable Terrain Response mode** to your Land Rover or Range Rover. This upgrade enables the full Terrain Response 2 interface, allowing you to customize throttle response, gearbox shift behaviour, steering weight, suspension damping, and traction control intervention independently — giving you precise control over vehicle dynamics both on- and off-road.
The Configurable Terrain Response mode is a feature of JLR’s second-generation Terrain Response system (TR2), first introduced on the Range Rover L405 and later made available on Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport L494, and Evoque. Unlike standard TR1 modes (General, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl) which apply fixed presets, Configurable mode uses a slider-based interface to adjust five parameters: **Engine Throttle**, **Transmission**, **Steering**, **Suspension**, and **Traction Control**. This mode allows the driver to fine-tune the vehicle’s behaviour for specific conditions, such as towing on wet grass, high-speed desert running, or technical rock crawling with maximum articulation.
Technical Overview: Terrain Response 2 Architecture
The TR2 system is a distributed control network involving the following ECUs and CAN messages:
- ATCM (All-Terrain Control Module): Master controller for Terrain Response logic. Processes driver inputs from the Terrain Response switch and transmits requested mode to other systems via CAN bus (HS CAN, 500 kbps).
- ECM (Engine Control Module): Adjusts throttle map, fuel injection strategy, and cruise control behaviour based on TR mode. In Configurable mode, the throttle mapping is determined by the “Engine Throttle” slider setting.
- TCM (Transmission Control Module): Modifies shift schedules, torque converter lock-up timing, and shift firmness. Configurable “Transmission” slider moves between Eco-oriented early upshifts and Sport-oriented delayed shifts with faster clutch apply.
- EPS (Electric Power Steering) Module: Adjusts steering assist curves. The “Steering” slider ranges from Comfort (maximum assist, reduced feel) to Dynamic (reduced assist, increased feedback).
- CDC (Continuous Damping Control) Module (if equipped): Modifies damping forces at each corner. The “Suspension” slider adjusts from Comfort (soft, high compliance) to Dynamic (firm, reduced body roll).
- ABS/ESP Module: Adjusts traction control intervention thresholds and ESC stability calibration. The “Traction Control” slider ranges from On-road (full intervention) to Off-road (reduced intervention, more wheel slip allowed).
- Switch Pack (HVAC Panel or Centre Console): Contains the Terrain Response rotary dial and, for TR2, a bank of four switches (ECU Calibration Select, Suspension, Dynamic Mode, Configurable Mode toggle). Vehicles without the optional Configurable mode have a blank panel.
The critical difference between TR1 and TR2 is the ability to enter Configurable mode. TR1 vehicles (e.g., late Discovery 4 with a 6-mode switch) have the hardware but lack the ECU calibration and CAN bus message support for the Configurable interface. Our retrofit installs the necessary switch pack and updates the ATCM calibration to enable Configurable mode.
- Your vehicle must already be fitted with Terrain Response 1 (6-mode rotary dial, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl). Vehicles with only 4 modes (without Rock Crawl) are not compatible — this indicates an older ABS/ESP module.
- For vehicles without CDC (standard steel springs or air suspension without CDC), the “Suspension” slider will have no effect. The interface will display but the damping remains fixed.
- For vehicles without EPAS (hydraulic power steering), the “Steering” slider will have no effect. This applies to some early L319 Discovery 4 models (2010-2013 with hydraulic steering).
- The Configurable mode requires a MY2014+ ATCM hardware revision. If your ATCM is pre-2013, we must also replace the module (additional cost). We verify this from the VIN before ordering.
What Does Configurable Terrain Response Mode Offer?
When activated, the Configurable mode presents a dedicated screen on the instrument cluster (or infotainment display on later models) with five slider controls. Each slider has 5 discrete positions (1-5). The table below shows the effect of each slider position on the corresponding vehicle system:
| Parameter | Slider Position 1 (Minimum) | Slider Position 3 (Default) | Slider Position 5 (Maximum) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine Throttle | Low sensitivity, progressive ramp, max 80% demand at full pedal | Linear mapping, 100% demand at full pedal | High sensitivity, immediate torque demand, 100% at 60% pedal travel |
| Transmission | Eco shift schedule: early upshifts (2000 rpm), early torque converter lock | Standard (Auto) shift pattern: 2500 rpm upshifts, moderate lock-up | Sport shift schedule: late upshifts (4000 rpm), forced kickdown, faster shift times (15% reduction) |
| Steering | Maximum assist (Comfort mode), 2.8 Nm steering torque at parking | Standard assist, 3.5 Nm at parking | Minimum assist (Dynamic mode), 4.5 Nm at parking, increased on-centre feel |
| Suspension (CDC) | Soft damping, low compression/rebound force, maximum compliance | Medium damping, balanced comfort and control | Firm damping, high compression/rebound, minimal body roll, 20% stiffer than standard |
| Traction Control | On-road: full ESC/traction intervention, limited wheel slip (1%) | Standard intervention allowed (5% wheel slip) | Off-road: reduced intervention, allowed wheel slip up to 20%, DSC partially disabled |
These sliders can be set independently according to the driver’s preference. For example, a common configuration for towing a heavy trailer on road is: Throttle 2 (progressive), Transmission 3 (auto), Steering 5 (firm), Suspension 5 (firm), Traction Control 1 (full intervention). For sand driving: Throttle 5 (immediate), Transmission 5 (sport), Steering 2 (light), Suspension 3 (medium), Traction Control 4 (reduced intervention).
Vehicle Compatibility
This retrofit is compatible with the following JLR vehicles equipped with Terrain Response 1 (6-mode rotary dial) and a compatible ATCM revision:
- Land Rover Discovery 4 (L319) – 2010-2016 (MY14+ recommended; pre-MY14 may require ATCM replacement)
- Range Rover Sport (L494) – 2013-2017 (all variants with TR1)
- Range Rover (L405) – 2013-2017 (vehicles not already equipped with Configurable mode)
- Range Rover Evoque (L538) – 2011-2018 (with TR1, 9-speed auto only)
- Land Rover Freelander 2 (L359) – 2012-2014 (with TR1 and 6-speed auto)
Important: This upgrade is for the off-road focused Terrain Response system. It is not compatible with the simpler “Terrain Response 1 with 4 modes” found on early Freelander 2 (pre-2012) or entry-level Evoque models without Rock Crawl. Please email your VIN to tech@lr-retrofit.com for a compatibility check before ordering.
Retrofit Process: JLR Technical Workflow
- VIN Verification & ATCM Audit: We check your vehicle’s VIN against JLR parts database to confirm the existing ATCM hardware revision (part number). If the ATCM is LR041333 or later, it supports Configurable mode. If earlier, we supply a compatible ATCM (pre-programmed with your vehicle’s VIN via SDD).
- Switch Pack Replacement: We supply a new HVAC panel or centre console switch pack (depending on your vehicle layout) that includes the Configurable Mode toggle switch and the associated switch for ECU Calibration Select (if not already present). For vehicles with the standard 6-mode dial, the new panel has 8 positions: the additional two are for Configurable mode and Eco mode (if not already present).
- Wiring Integration:
- Route the new switch pack’s LIN bus connection to the ATCM. The Configurable mode toggle uses a dedicated LIN signal (pin 3 of connector C2749 on L319).
- If your vehicle lacks the Configurable mode CAN message support in the instrument cluster, we update the IPC (Instrument Pack) calibration via SDD. This displays the Configurable mode screen with the five sliders.
- For vehicles without the Configurable mode wiring present, we install a loom extension between the switch pack and ATCM. This loom is supplied pre-assembled with OEM connectors.
- ATCM Calibration Update: Using JLR SDD or JLR Pathfinder, we flash the ATCM with the latest production calibration that includes Configurable mode support. We also update the ABS/ESP calibration if required (for Traction Control slider compatibility). The update takes approximately 30 minutes via the OBD port.
- System Validation: We verify:
- All five sliders display on the instrument cluster (or infotainment screen on later models).
- Each slider adjusts the corresponding system (e.g., setting Steering to 5 produces noticeably heavier steering; setting Transmission to 5 results in higher rev shift points when driving).
- No DTCs are stored in ATCM, ECM, TCM, EPS, or CDC modules related to missing or invalid messages.
- The Configurable mode toggle activates and deactivates correctly, and the mode icon (a gear with sliders) appears on the instrument cluster.
