Genuine JLR Heated Steering Wheel Retrofit — Factory‑Spec Warmth & Touchscreen Control
A Complete Factory System — Not a Universal Wrap
We reject cheap aftermarket heating elements that wrap around your existing wheel. Those solutions interfere with the leather seam, create an inconsistent rim thickness, and never integrate with the vehicle network. Your Land Rover or Jaguar deserves the authentic componentry that the Gaydon and Whitley engineering centres specified.
Our genuine JLR heated steering rim contains an embedded carbon‑fibre heating mat laminated directly into the wheel structure during manufacture. The heating element distributes warmth evenly across the full circumference of the rim — from the 9 o’clock position, through the top grip zone, to the 3 o’clock position. You feel gentle, consistent heat across the entire leather or wood surface within two minutes of activation.
Each rim arrives with the correct leather grade and stitching colour for your vehicle. We supply Graeme leather, Windsor leather, or the genuine open‑pore wood and leather combination for Range Rover models. The thread colour matches your existing airbag cover and interior trim exactly.
The Critical Component: Genuine Heated Clockspring & LIN Bus Integration
A standard Clockspring carries signals for the horn, audio controls, and cruise control. The heated wheel requires an additional two‑pin power pathway through the rotary coupler. JLR engineers design a specific heated Clockspring variant that incorporates these extra tracks while maintaining absolute reliability of all other steering wheel functions across the full rotation range.
We install this genuine heated Clockspring in place of your existing unit. The process requires precise alignment with the steering angle sensor, and our technicians follow the JLR workshop manual procedure to ensure zero degree‑of‑rotation error. No warning lights, no traction‑control misalignment.
From the Clockspring, a dedicated positive feed runs through the column shroud to the Battery Junction Box. We install the correct 15‑amp fuse in the vacant position that JLR designate for heated‑wheel circuits. The earth path terminates at the factory steering‑column ground point. Every wire uses the original JLR terminal type and connector housing — no scotch‑locks, no T‑taps, no aftermarket fuse holders.
Touchscreen Activation & Automatic Temperature Regulation
The heating element communicates with the vehicle through the LIN bus network. When you press the “Heated Steering Wheel” soft‑button on the climate‑control screen or the physical switch panel, the Climate Control Module sends an activation command. The heating element draws approximately 80 watts at maximum output, reaching the target surface temperature of 32°C within 90 seconds. An embedded thermistor monitors the rim temperature continuously and reduces current draw once the target temperature stabilises.
The system includes three programmable behaviours that we activate through CCF coding:
- Manual activation: You press the touchscreen button or hard‑switch for immediate heat.
- Automatic timer: The system deactivates after 15 minutes of continuous operation to prevent unnecessary power consumption.
- Cold‑weather auto‑activation: When the external temperature sensor registers below 4°C, the heated steering wheel activates automatically alongside the heated front and rear screens on remote start or ignition‑on.
We enable all three functions through the Car Configuration File during installation. The option appears on the “Climate” sub‑menu of the touchscreen, and the central vehicle Gateway Module recognises the heated steering control module permanently. Subsequent JLR dealer software updates preserve our coding.
Installation by JLR‑Trained Technicians
Our installation process follows a strict factory‑grade workflow. First, we disconnect the vehicle battery and remove the driver’s airbag using the correct spring‑clip tool. The original steering wheel, Clockspring, and column shrouds come away. We then mount the new heated Clockspring with the centring locking tab in place, ensuring the steering angle sensor remains at absolute zero.
The new heated rim fits onto the splined column, and we torque the central retaining bolt to the JLR specification — typically 33 Nm plus a 90‑degree angle torque. The wiring harness routes through the column without fouling the tilt or reach adjustment mechanism. We reconnect the airbag, clear any stored crash data, and perform a full SRS self‑test.
Finally, we connect the JLR‑approved diagnostic interface and update the CCF. This step writes the “Heated Steering Wheel — Fitted” flag to the Gateway Module, Climate Control Module, and Instrument Pack. The soft‑key appears on the touchscreen, the auto‑heat timer logic activates, and the system enters full operational status. We test the heating cycle, check the thermistor feedback, and verify LIN bus communication before returning the vehicle to you.
