Start/Stop System Deactivation for Jaguar Land Rover
Disable the auto start/stop function permanently through professional CCF coding.
Why Deactivate the Start/Stop System on Your JLR Vehicle?
Jaguar Land Rover fits an automatic Start/Stop system to most modern models. The system cuts the engine when you stop in traffic and restarts it the moment you release the brake or press the clutch. This feature reduces fuel consumption and lowers emissions during city driving. Many owners, however, find the behaviour intrusive and want it gone for good.
You may grow tired of the constant restart shudder, especially on diesels. You may worry about premature wear on the starter motor and battery. Owners who tow heavy trailers, drive off-road, or operate in extreme temperatures often find the system interrupts their control. Others simply prefer a consistent driving experience without the engine cutting out at every junction. Our Start/Stop deactivation service removes the function permanently while leaving every other vehicle system untouched.
How the Factory Start/Stop System Works
The Engine Control Module (ECM) manages the Start/Stop function. It receives data from the Battery Monitoring System (BMS), the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), the Transmission Control Module (TCM), and the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) module. When conditions allow, the ECM stops the engine. It restarts the engine when you release the brake pedal or press the clutch, or when the battery voltage drops below a threshold.
The Car Configuration File (CCF) contains a parameter that tells the ECM whether the vehicle includes the Start/Stop feature. JLR sets this parameter to “enabled” at the factory. Our technicians change that value to “disabled” using approved JLR diagnostic tools. The ECM then treats the vehicle as one that never had the system, so it stops cutting the engine and stops issuing restart commands.
Our Deactivation Procedure
We connect an approved JLR diagnostic interface to the vehicle’s OBD port. For most models, we use JLR System Driven Diagnostics (SDD) in engineering mode or JLR Pathfinder with the DoIP Vehicle Communication Interface, depending on model year. The platform reads your VIN and retrieves the live CCF from the vehicle.
We back up the original CCF before we make any change. That backup allows us to restore factory behaviour at any time. We then locate the Start/Stop parameter, set it to disabled, and write the updated CCF back to the vehicle. After the write completes, we clear any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that appeared during the session. We verify the result by confirming that no warning messages appear and that the engine no longer cuts out when you stop.
A stable power supply is essential. We connect a battery support unit that delivers 20 to 30 amps at 13.5 to 14.2 volts throughout the session. This precaution prevents the voltage drop that can interrupt a CCF write and corrupt module memory. We check battery health before we begin.
Compatible Vehicles
This service suits a broad range of Jaguar Land Rover vehicles fitted with the factory Start/Stop system. Typical models include:
- Range Rover (L405 and L460)
- Range Rover Sport (L494 and L461)
- Discovery (L462 and earlier)
- Discovery Sport (L550)
- Range Rover Evoque (L538 and L551)
- Defender (L663)
- Jaguar XE, XF, XJ, F-Pace, E-Pace, and F-Type
Software versions vary across model years, so we always verify compatibility against your VIN before you order. Send your registration or VIN through our contact form, and we reply with a definitive answer.
What the Service Includes
- Full CCF backup before any modification
- Start/Stop parameter identification and editing
- CCF write using approved JLR diagnostic tools
- DTC clearing and module self-tests
- Post-coding verification that the engine no longer stops
- Written summary of the change performed
Remote and Workshop Options
We run remote sessions for owners who have a compatible JLR diagnostic interface, a Windows laptop, and a stable internet connection. Our technician connects to your laptop and guides the process from start to finish while you supply the battery support unit. We also welcome vehicles to our UK workshop for a hands-on appointment. Remote sessions cost less, and workshop visits suit vehicles that need further coding or diagnostics alongside this change.
