JLR Traffic Sign Recognition and Driver Drowsy Monitor — TSR + DDM Retrofit
We configure Traffic Sign Recognition and Driver Drowsy Monitor on your Jaguar Land Rover vehicle. Traffic Sign Recognition reads speed limit signs, no overtaking signs and variable overhead speed signs through the forward-facing camera, then displays the detected symbols in your instrument cluster. Driver Drowsy Monitor evaluates your driving technique for signs of fatigue and prompts you to take a break when it detects them. Both systems share the same IPMA forward camera module, which means you activate two valuable safety features through one configuration. We pair every activation to your VIN and confirm compatibility before we begin.
Why Add Traffic Sign Recognition and Driver Drowsy Monitor
Speed limits change constantly, and missing a sign is easy on an unfamiliar road. Fatigue builds gradually, and its effects on reaction time and concentration develop before you notice them. Traffic Sign Recognition removes the uncertainty around current speed limits, while Driver Drowsy Monitor provides an objective check on your alertness when your own judgement may fall short. Together they form a strong safety combination.
When you activate both features, you gain:
- Speed limit signs, no overtaking signs and variable overhead speed signs displayed in your instrument cluster.
- Speed alert warnings that flash when your vehicle speed exceeds the detected limit, with three configurable alert thresholds: at the limit, 5 mph above, or 10 mph above.
- Driver fatigue detection that monitors your steering inputs, brake and throttle pedal activity to identify the signs of drowsiness.
- A “Take a break!” warning in the instrument panel with an audible chime when the system detects fatigue.
- Full integration with your existing instrument cluster menu and driver assistance settings.
- No aftermarket displays and no visible wiring, which preserves your factory interior finish.
The systems work alongside Adaptive Cruise Control and the Adaptive Speed Limiter on compatible platforms. When you activate the Adaptive Speed Limiter, it uses the traffic sign information to adjust your vehicle speed automatically to match the detected limit. Owners value this combination on motorway journeys, on unfamiliar routes and during long drives where fatigue and changing speed limits both present real risks.
Compatibility and Vehicle Coverage
Both features require a forward-facing camera module, designated IPMA (Image Processing Module A) on the JLR network, mounted at the base of the interior rear-view mirror. We support a wide range of JLR vehicles across the major model lines, including:
- Land Rover Defender (L663), Discovery (L462), Discovery Sport (L550), Range Rover Evoque (L551), Range Rover Velar (L560), Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.
- Jaguar F-Pace (X761), XF (X260), XE (X760), I-Pace (X590), E-Pace (X540) and F-Type.
We check your VIN against the JLR parts catalogue and confirm whether your vehicle carries the required IPMA camera and the correct wiring provisions. Where your build lacks the camera hardware, we supply the genuine JLR forward camera module, the windscreen mounting bracket and the OEM-specification wiring loom as a complete kit. Some earlier model years need an IPMA software update to support the full feature set, and we verify that during the VIN check. Traffic Sign Recognition works correctly with the factory navigation system, which supplies speed limit data for roads with no signage.
How the Process Works
We keep the activation organised and predictable:
- VIN verification: You send your 17-character VIN. We identify your model, build year, IPMA software level and instrument cluster type.
- Hardware check: We confirm whether your vehicle already carries the forward camera. Where it does not, we prepare the camera kit and wiring loom.
- Installation or activation: If hardware is required, you fit the camera and bracket to the windscreen and connect the harness. If the camera is already present, we move directly to configuration.
- Configuration: We edit the Car Configuration File parameters for your VIN and enable both TSR and DDM through the JLR diagnostic platform. The TrafficSignRecogTSR parameter at CCF address 0x6A87 sets the Traffic Sign Recognition state, with values for TSR fitted and TSR fitted with over-speed warning. The driver drowsiness activation follows the same configuration structure.
- Calibration and test: You complete a static calibration with the supplied target, then confirm correct operation of both features with a short road test.
Our technical team stays available throughout the process, and we answer questions at any stage.
JLR Technical Specification
The IPMA module processes image data from the forward-facing camera in real time. For Traffic Sign Recognition, the system detects speed limit signs, no overtaking signs and variable overhead speed signs, then displays symbols of the detected signs in the message centre. The system also detects traffic signs with extra information, such as reduced speed limits for wet road conditions, and compares that data against vehicle inputs including the rain sensor and wipers before displaying the result. Speed limit information from the navigation system appears for roads with no signage. The system operates up to a maximum speed of 155 mph.
For Driver Drowsy Monitor, the IPMA evaluates driving technique at vehicle speeds between 37 mph and 112 mph. When the system determines that you are fatigued, the instrument panel displays the warning “Take a break!” for 30 seconds with an audible chime. If driving continues, a further warning appears with another chime until you acknowledge it through the OK button on the steering wheel. You can switch Driver Drowsy Monitor off through the Driving Features menu in the instrument panel. Our configuration writes back against your As-Built record and follows the factory Car Configuration File structure, which keeps every setting consistent with the production build.
Legal and Safety Notice
Traffic Sign Recognition and Driver Drowsy Monitor operate as driving aids only. They do not replace driver attention. The driver remains responsible for observing all road signs, road markings and traffic conditions at all times. Please keep the windscreen area in front of the rear-view mirror clean and free of obstructions such as stickers, debris, mud, snow or ice.
