Upgrade Lower Power 2.2 TD4 to High Power SD4 Specification
LR Retrofit offers a factory-calibration upgrade that converts the 150 hp 2.2 TD4 engine to the 190 hp SD4 specification. The upgrade applies to JLR vehicles built on the PSA DW12 common-rail diesel platform, including Freelander 2 and Range Rover Evoque models from the 2011 model year onward. The process reprograms the engine control module with factory SD4 calibration data and requires no mechanical component changes on vehicles that share the SD4 engine hardware. You gain 40 hp and 20 Nm of torque, sharper throttle response, and the acceleration profile of the higher factory tune while retaining OEM reliability characteristics and full reversibility.
The 2.2 TD4 and SD4 share the same DW12 block, cylinder head, and internal reciprocating components in the 2011-onwards 150 hp application. JLR differentiates the two variants through calibration strategy in the engine control module rather than through hardware. This commonality makes a factory-version calibration transfer technically sound: the upgrade restores the engine to the output level that the same hardware delivers in SD4 form. The 150 hp TD4 reaches 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds; the 190 hp SD4 achieves the same sprint in 8.9 seconds.
What the Upgrade Delivers
Power and torque. The calibration raises output from 150 hp and 400 Nm to 190 hp and 420 Nm. Torque delivery remains smooth across the rev range, with the SD4 calibration map optimising boost pressure, injection timing, and rail pressure for the higher output.
Factory calibration integrity. LR Retrofit applies the OEM SD4 target calibration rather than a custom remap. This approach preserves the manufacturer’s protection strategies, diagnostic routines, and emissions behaviour for the target power level. The engine control module retains its original software architecture and security protocols.
Full reversibility. The original TD4 calibration remains archived and restorable. Because the process changes only the software calibration inside the engine control module, LR Retrofit can return the vehicle to factory 150 hp specification at any time.
Fuel consumption continuity. Factory-version calibration keeps OEM fuelling behaviour under normal driving. Consumption remains close to the factory specification of the target engine version rather than shifting to a richer custom-map profile.
Transmission Compatibility and Technical Limits
The upgrade suits vehicles fitted with the Aisin six-speed automatic transmission, which JLR rated for the SD4’s 420 Nm output and offered as the sole SD4 transmission. The automatic gearbox carries a design capacity of approximately 450 Nm, which provides a safe operating margin for the factory SD4 calibration.
Manual-transmission TD4 vehicles require a more careful assessment. The six-speed manual gearbox carries a design torque limit in the region of 380–400 Nm, and JLR itself limits torque delivery in first and reverse gears to protect the transmission. LR Retrofit reviews each manual vehicle’s VIN and gearbox code before confirming the upgrade path. Where the manual transmission cannot safely accept the full SD4 torque curve, LR Retrofit applies a torque-managed calibration that preserves driveability and protects the gearbox. This consultative approach keeps the upgrade durable as well as responsive.
The 2WD eD4 variant falls outside this upgrade’s scope. The eD4 uses different, smaller injectors, and raising output to SD4 level would push injector duty cycle beyond a safe limit.
Vehicle Coverage and Platform Detail
LR Retrofit supports the 2.2 TD4 to SD4 calibration upgrade on the following JLR applications:
| Model | Engine Code | Model Year Focus | ECU Platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelander 2 (L359) | 224DT / DW12BTED4 | 2011–2014 | Bosch EDC17CP42 |
| Range Rover Evoque (L538) | 224DT / DW12BTED4 | 2011–2018 | Bosch EDC17CP42 |
Earlier 2007–2010 TD4 engines producing 160 hp use a different calibration baseline and, in some build phases, different turbocharger and injector specifications. LR Retrofit confirms compatibility against the VIN and the engine control module part number before accepting an order. The target factory calibration version depends on the vehicle’s emissions package and market configuration, so the VIN check forms a mandatory first step.
How the Remote Calibration Works
You submit the VIN, model year, transmission type, and current engine control module software version. LR Retrofit verifies the vehicle against the factory SD4 calibration database and confirms the correct target file. On the session date, you connect a JLR ENET WiFi adapter to the vehicle’s diagnostic port and maintain a stabilised power supply at 13.5 V or above. The technician establishes an encrypted remote connection, reads the current calibration, writes the factory SD4 calibration, and completes a post-programming scan to verify fault-free operation. The session typically runs 45 to 75 minutes. You receive a calibration report documenting the before and after software versions, together with the archived original file for future restoration.
Technical Requirements
- JLR ENET WiFi diagnostic adapter compatible with the vehicle’s diagnostic port.
- Windows 10 or 11 laptop with a stable internet connection.
- Stabilised power supply maintaining at least 13.5 V throughout programming.
- VIN, model year, transmission type, and current ECU software version submitted before the session.
- Battery in good condition; LR Retrofit recommends a charger connected during the write process.
Why Choose LR Retrofit for the TD4 to SD4 Calibration Upgrade
LR Retrofit works with factory calibration files and JLR-compatible engineering tools rather than generic remap files of unknown origin. The team verifies every VIN against the correct target calibration and assesses transmission compatibility before confirming an order. Trade clients access priority scheduling and multi-vehicle calibration support through the Professional Installer Program. The upgrade remains fully documented, reversible, and aligned with the engineering logic JLR applied when it built the SD4 variant.
