2.2 TD4 & SD4 Chip-Tuning — Stage 1 Calibration (224DT Duratorq)
The 2.2-litre Duratorq diesel (224DT) powers the Freelander 2, the Range Rover Evoque, and the early Discovery Sport. JLR released this engine in two calibration tiers: the TD4 at 150PS and 400Nm, and the SD4 at 190PS and 420Nm. Both tiers run the same long-block architecture, the same Bosch common-rail injection hardware, and the same Bosch EDC17CP42 engine control module. JLR built further headroom into the platform than either factory map exposes.
Our Stage 1 calibration extracts that headroom. The TD4 tune gains 50PS and 60Nm on measured dyno protocols. The SD4 tune gains 35PS and 60Nm. Both deliver a broader torque plateau, sharper part-throttle response, and the mid-range pull that makes the 224DT feel like the engine JLR engineered rather than the variant the emissions strategy restrained.
Why Both Factory Maps Leave Performance on the Table
JLR calibrated the TD4 and SD4 conservatively for fleet CO₂ positioning, taxation bands, and driveline life management across three vehicle platforms. The torque-request mapping inside the EDC17CP42 carries early smoke-limitation ceilings and conservative rail-pressure targets. The SD4 map raises those thresholds but stops well short of the hardware’s validated thermal and mechanical limits.
The platform supports more. Owners who fit a larger intercooler and a free-flowing exhaust routinely record safe, repeatable gains beyond our standard Stage 1 figures. A correct calibration raises the torque ceiling within the validated envelope of the specific hardware generation rather than chasing a headline number.
Hardware Generations and Calibration Matching
Early Freelander 2 builds (2007–2010) run a Garrett turbocharger. Later production and the Evoque use the Mitsubishi TD04L variable-geometry unit. Injection hardware also varies by build phase, with Bosch injector families 0445115042 and 0445116043 covering the majority of applications. We read your existing calibration and verify the hardware identification against the JLR parts catalogue before writing any file. The Stage 1 calibration then matches your specific turbocharger and injection configuration.
We do not disable torque monitoring, we do not remove the gearbox protection logic, and we do not touch the DPF or EGR monitor routines.
Measured Stage 1 Outcomes
| Parameter | TD4 (Stock) | TD4 Stage 1 | SD4 (Stock) | SD4 Stage 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum Power | 150 PS | 200 PS | 190 PS | 225 PS |
| Maximum Torque | 400 Nm | 460 Nm | 420 Nm | 480 Nm |
| Power Gain | — | +50 PS | — | +35 PS |
| Torque Gain | — | +60 Nm | — | +60 Nm |
The TD4 delivers the larger proportional gain because JLR left more headroom in the lower tune. The SD4 calibration extracts the remaining safe torque without pushing the standard turbocharger beyond its validated compressor map.
Transmission-Specific Calibration
We validate every file against your vehicle’s transmission specification before writing. The Aisin and Getrag automatic units handle the full Stage 1 torque figure without modification. The manual gearbox carries a validated torque ceiling, so manual-equipped vehicles receive a calibrated file that respects that ceiling while still delivering meaningful gains across the power band. Our process confirms your transmission type and applies the appropriate torque-limiter strategy.
The calibration preserves Haldex coupling behaviour, cruise-control functionality, diagnostic readiness, and all factory emission-control monitors. The ECU retains its original immobiliser data and VIN coding.
What Changes Behind the Wheel
The most immediate change is throttle linearity. Stage 1 removes the torque truncation that defines the factory map, so part-throttle response becomes sharper and the engine pulls cleanly to a higher rpm ceiling. The engine holds peak torque from approximately 1,700 rpm through 2,800 rpm, which transforms overtaking, motorway gradient work, and towing stability. The platform finally delivers the performance the 224DT supports — without aftermarket hardware, without compromised service life, and without departing from the engineering validation JLR applied to this engine family.
Ordering and Calibration Support
Select your model, model year, engine output (TD4 or SD4), and transmission type at checkout. Our calibration team reviews every order against the vehicle’s VIN and ECU identification before releasing the file. You receive the calibration delivery, a vehicle-specific flashing guide, and direct engineering support from engineers who work with the 224DT platform daily.
Release the performance the TD4 and SD4 calibrations hold back. Stage 1 chip tuning for the 2.2 Duratorq — JLR-informed calibration, driveline protection retained, emission monitors intact.
