What Is Wade Sensing?
Land Rover developed Wade Sensing to support serious off-road driving. Ultrasonic sensors in both door mirrors measure the distance to the water surface. The system calculates the current wading depth and displays it on the central touchscreen. When the water reaches 750 mm, the system activates automatically and starts reporting depth in real time. As the water level rises, the display updates continuously. If you approach the vehicle’s maximum wading depth, a visual alert prompts you to stop safely. How the Retrofit Works

Technical Overview
Wade Sensing uses ultrasonic sensors that transmit and receive sound pulses. The system measures the time delay between the transmitted pulse and the reflected echo from the water surface. This data travels over the vehicle’s LIN or CAN network to the central processor. The touchscreen then displays the depth in millimetres. Maximum wading depths vary by model. For example, Discovery 5 and Range Rover L405 support up to 900 mm, while Defender 110 also reaches 900 mm with air suspension. The system’s accuracy remains consistent at low speed, which makes it ideal for careful river crossings and floodwater.
