Activity Key GEN2 — JLR Wearable Waterproof Key Retrofit
The Activity Key GEN2 is JLR’s second-generation wearable key, and it solves a problem that conventional key fobs cannot. Surfers, swimmers, trail runners, cyclists, and off-road drivers need to lock a vehicle and leave the key behind without hiding a fob under a wheel arch or trusting a magnetic box. The GEN2 wristband replaces that compromise. You wear the key, lock the conventional fob inside the vehicle, and the system suppresses the internal fob signal while the wristband retains full access authority.
This retrofit installs the genuine JLR hardware and activates the feature through certified Pathfinder DOIP programming. Many JLR vehicles left the factory with PEPS keyless-entry hardware fully capable of supporting the Activity Key, but JLR’s Car Configuration File locked the feature behind a trim-level software restriction. Our calibration unlocks that dormant capability. The vehicle then recognises the GEN2 wristband for passive entry, passive start, and walk-away locking exactly as a factory-optioned build would.
How the GEN2 System Communicates with the Vehicle
The KVM-RFA (Keyless Vehicle Module – Remote Function Actuator) manages all Activity Key GEN2 operations. The wristband carries a passive 125 kHz RFID transponder and an active UHF transmitter running on 433 MHz or 315 MHz depending on market. The RFA module detects the wristband’s unique identifier as the driver approaches, validates it against stored security credentials, and permits unlocking through the capacitive door-handle sensors. The GEN2 adds full passive entry, passive start, and passive locking — the vehicle locks automatically when the wristband moves out of RF range, and the driver starts the engine with the start/stop button without placing the wristband anywhere specific.
The wristband contains no user-serviceable battery. A sealed lithium cell powers the integrated low-power LCD, which displays time, battery level, and lock status. A typical cell lasts five to seven years, and JLR seals the unit against water and dust intrusion rather than exposing a charging port.

Why Programming Decides Whether the Wristband Works
Physical hardware alone cannot operate the Activity Key GEN2. The KVM stores every authorised key transponder ID, and the vehicle ignores the wristband until a technician writes its unique identifier into KVM memory and updates the relevant CCF feature flags. Generic third-party key-cloning tools cannot reproduce JLR’s rolling-code encryption or meet the KVM-RFA authentication thresholds. Poor-quality edits trigger persistent anti-theft DTC faults, cause wristband connection drops, or interfere with existing smart-key fob operation.
Our technicians run certified Pathfinder DOIP programming and update the KVM, BCM, and GWM gateway CCF parameters. The process registers the GEN2 transponder ID, completes immobiliser synchronisation, and validates clean CAN-bus communication across every connected security module. We edit only validated CCF configuration flags and avoid permanent destructive ECU-flash operations. All factory anti-theft protection rules, rolling-code encryption protocols, and diagnostic-logging routines remain fully intact.
Supported Models and VIN Verification
This retrofit suits DOIP-architecture JLR vehicles that carry compatible PEPS-KVM keyless hardware and the Pivi Pro or InControl Touch Pro infotainment architecture. Representative compatible platforms include New Defender L663 (2020 onwards), Range Rover L460, Range Rover Sport L461, Velar L560 (2021 onwards), Discovery 5 L462 (2021 onwards), Range Rover Evoque L551 (2021 onwards with passive entry), Discovery Sport L550 (2021 onwards with passive entry), and late-model premium Jaguar DOIP chassis. Earlier vehicles from 2017–2020 may also accept the GEN2 key directly, and some require a Remote Function Actuator upgrade.
We verify every VIN before releasing hardware or booking a programming session. That check confirms KVM-RFA firmware level, CAN-DOIP bus stability, RF-receiver health, and available key-profile slots. Most compatible models accept multiple programmed keys, and the Activity Key GEN2 works alongside your existing smart keys without removing any previously enrolled profile.
Installation and Functional Validation
The retrofit is predominantly software-based. Most vehicles need no physical wiring changes because the factory RFA module and antenna architecture already support the wristband. Where a vehicle requires a supplementary RF antenna interface module, we supply the genuine component and fit it behind the rear quarter trim or within the roof console area.
Our technician connects Pathfinder through the OBD port, runs a full multi-module pre-scan, and writes the GEN2 transponder ID into the KVM. The CCF update enables the Activity Key menus in the touchscreen and instrument cluster. We then test passive entry unlock, passive-start engine authorisation, walk-away locking, and in-vehicle fob suppression before clearing any residual fault codes. The entire process typically completes in under two hours.
What the Driver Gains
The driver locks the conventional key fob inside the vehicle and wears the Activity Key GEN2. The vehicle deactivates the internal fob’s signal, so unauthorised access through the stored key becomes impossible while the wristband retains valid access rights. The driver swims, surfs, runs, or works around the vehicle without carrying a bulky fob or worrying about water damage. The IP68 seal handles fresh water, salt water, and chlorinated water, and the silicone strap resists salt, UV radiation, and common chemicals. The integrated LCD adds practical timekeeping and battery-status visibility. Every factory relay-attack protection and rolling-code encryption protocol stays active, so the security posture matches the original smart-key standard.
