Powered Gesture Tailgate Retrofit – Hands‑Free Boot Access for Land Rover & Range Rover
Transform your vehicle’s tailgate operation with the genuine Powered Gesture Tailgate system. This retrofit enables you to open or close the powered tailgate simply by making a deliberate kicking motion under the rear bumper – no need to touch the vehicle, set down shopping, or search for the key fob. The system is identical in function and integration to the factory‑fitted option, using the same radar‑based sensor technology and communicating directly with the vehicle’s Central Door Locking and Power Tailgate Control Modules.
How the Gesture Tailgate System Works
The system consists of two intelligent radar sensors mounted discreetly behind the lower rear bumper trim. Each sensor operates in the 24 GHz K‑band, creating a detection zone directly beneath the bumper. When the vehicle is locked with a valid Smart Key within 1.5 metres, the sensors continuously scan for a characteristic “kick‑in, kick‑out” movement. Upon recognition, the sensor module sends a LIN‑bus command to the Power Tailgate Control Module (PTCM), which then operates the motorised struts to open the tailgate. The same motion can be repeated while the tailgate is open to close it automatically.
The gesture algorithm is calibrated to reject false triggers from animals, rain, exhaust gas, or washing – it requires a precise, intentional foot sweep. The system also respects the vehicle’s safety interlocks: the tailgate will not operate if the vehicle is in motion, if an obstacle is detected by the anti‑pinch strips, or if the gear selector is not in Park. All parameters are configurable via the Car Configuration File (CCF), allowing you to set the detection sensitivity, disable the feature temporarily through the touchscreen, or limit operation to specific keys.
Key Technical Benefits
- True hands‑free operation – Approach the vehicle with arms full, perform a single kick, and the tailgate opens or closes without any physical contact.
- Genuine radar sensor technology – The dual‑sensor setup provides a wide detection area and reliable performance even when the bumper is dirty, wet, or covered in road spray.
- Full OEM integration – The system appears in the vehicle’s settings menu, supports user‑selectable disable, and works in harmony with the powered tailgate’s obstruction detection and pinch protection.
- No external modifications – The sensors mount inside the bumper shell using JLR‑approved brackets; the vehicle’s appearance remains completely standard.
- Secure operation – The gesture tailgate only responds when a programmed Smart Key is detected in the tail area, eliminating the risk of unauthorised opening.
- Compatible with tow bar and parking sensors – The mounting brackets are designed to coexist with factory reversing sensors, surround camera systems, and the detachable tow bar assembly.
Included Components
The retrofit kit contains every genuine Land Rover part required for installation:
- Two gesture recognition radar sensors (pre‑calibrated)
- Vehicle‑specific mounting brackets and fasteners
- Dedicated wiring harness with OEM connectors (plugs directly into the existing tailgate module and BCM)
- Protective conduit and retaining clips
- Installation template and CCF modification guide
All components are supplied in sealed Land Rover packaging. The kit does not include the powered tailgate struts themselves – the gesture system is an addition to an already fitted powered tailgate.
Compatible Vehicles
The gesture tailgate retrofit is available for vehicles already equipped with the factory powered tailgate and a compatible Central Door Locking architecture. The following models are supported:
| Model | Platform Code | Model Year from |
|---|---|---|
| Range Rover | L460 | 2022 onward |
| Range Rover Sport | L461 | 2022 onward |
| Range Rover Velar | L560 | 2021 onward (with powered tailgate) |
| Discovery 5 | L462 | 2021 onward |
| New Defender | L663 | 2020 onward (with powered tailgate option) |
| Range Rover Evoque | L551 | 2021 onward (with powered tailgate & keyless entry) |
| Discovery Sport | L550 | 2021 onward (with powered tailgate & keyless entry) |
Final compatibility is confirmed via your VIN. Vehicles that do not currently have a powered tailgate cannot be retrofitted with the gesture function alone – the powered tailgate must be present first.
Installation Process
The retrofit is carried out by our Master Technicians in the following steps:
- Removal of the rear bumper cover and lower trim to access the mounting positions.
- Installation of the two sensor brackets in the factory‑designated locations, using the pre‑marked dimples on the bumper carrier.
- Routing of the wiring harness along the factory channel and connection to the Power Tailgate Control Module (PTCM) and the Central Junction Box.
- Update of the PTCM, BCM, and KVM software to the latest calibration, followed by CCF modification to activate the “Hands‑Free Tailgate” feature.
- Sensor calibration using the diagnostic tool and functional testing of both open and close gestures.
Typical workshop time is 3–4 hours. Remote coding support is available for experienced installers who perform the physical work themselves.
Why lr‑retrofit.com for Your Gesture Tailgate Upgrade?
